Power

Four
providers handled electrical power to the community of West Wendover
and Wendover in the early part of the century. These four providers
included: the United States government, which operated Wendover
Field (the air base), the State Line Hotel & Casino, Peterson’s
Market and the Western Service Station Inc. These facilities would
provide power for their own operations as well as several of its
residential neighbors. In 1947 a small franchise was formed in the
community called Wendover Power Company. In 1951, the U.S. government
put up for bid its power generation plant as the base was being
downsized. Wendover Power Company was the successful bidder on the
plant and in 1952; Wendover Power began serving the community at
large as well as selling power back to the U.S. government for their
needs. In 1962, Wendover Power sold its franchise operation to a
start-up co-op called Wells Rural Electric Company, which was formed
to provide power to ranchers in the Wells, Nevada area. The acquisition
of Wendover Power provided the needed link to heavy commercial and
industrial business, which WREC needed. Since 1962, WREC has been
serving northeast Nevada as well as parts of western Utah with reliable
and quality service electrical power. As a professionally operated
electric co-op, the residents and businesses have a distinct advantage
over other operations. With the co-op each power user is a member
and has voting rights with regard to WREC’s Board of Directors
that set short-term, long-term and policy for the operation.
