Water and Sewer

The department maintains the citywide water system that includes five water wells, a main water spring, water transmission lines and water distribution lines, is wastewater plantresponsible for water quality and as well for wastewater treatment and solid waste disposal. The Department operates the City’s State and Federally certified laboratory for testing of both water and wastewater and takes great care in assuring that the community’s culinary water meets all State and Federal requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Each year, the Department completes the City’s Consumer and Confidence Report on Water Quality providing for public dissemination of water related issues.

Garbage

Up until 1998, garbage generated in the community was deposited in an old-style landfill located six miles east of the community in Tooele County, Utah.  Due to environmental regulations, this facility was closed and capped ancompost operationd a construction of a new landfill facility by the City of West Wendover was begun four miles south of West Wendover.  Along with the construction of the new landfill, the City also undertook the construction of a state-of-the-art compost facility, which is adjacent to the water reclamation facility on U.S. Highway 93A.  The compost facility accepts up to 25 tons a day of garbage.  This garbage is then mechanically sorted and combined with up to 5 tons a day of bio solids generated by the water reclamation facility.  This mix is then entered into a composting process.  The end result is 14 tons per day of compost material with 6 tons a day of non-compostable garbage such as glass and construction debris which is delivered to the landfill for disposal.  When combining the process of water reclamation with that of composting, West Wendover takes the lead for small rural communities by being over 70% recyclable while providing our desert community with a very in-need product for city beautification and development, compost.

In addition, the Department is responsible for storm drainage, waterways, streets, the city vehicle fleet, snow removal and various construction projects in the City as well as the maintenance of City owned properties and facilities.

Through all such operations, the City’s Public Works Department takes great pride in announcing that the City of West Wendover is environmentally friendly and is committed to excellence in serving the customers of the City.
