On February 20^th, City Manager Chris Melville presented Chief of Police Cal Kunz with his 5-year service award.

Cal began his service as Chief of Police with the City of West Wendover on January 14, 2019.  He has had a lengthy career of service in law enforcement serving over 21 years with the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) followed by 3 years as the Chief of Police for Ontario, Oregon, prior to accepting the position with West Wendover.

In his years of law enforcement service, Cal has held many command positions including as Lieutenant, Incident Commander for Emergency Operations, command positions in patrol, patrol administration, bicycle patrol, officer training/police academy, crisis intervention as well as serving undercover for the SLCPD Narcotics Unit and the DEA Task Force in addition to serving as a member of SWAT.

City Manager Melville remarked, “We are very fortunate to have been able to recruit Chief Kunz to take command of our Police Department some five years ago.  Serving as our Chief he has had a very important role in promoting positive morale not just in the WWPD but also the city organization as a whole.  He is a leader with strong character and sound judgment and it shows in the positive direction he has led his department and those serving with him.   It has been very clear Cal wants the best for not just his department but the community.   If you are fortunate, you will even get to experience his humor which is just another satisfying trait he proudly wears along with the badge.”

In addition to his service plaque, Chief Kunz also received a service pin designed with the City Seal.  The pin reflects the employee's years of service with a star for every five years served.  As well, he received a $25 Smith's Food Store Gift Card.
