Winter is Here – Protect Your Home from Frozen Pipes and Costly Water Damage!

Post Date:01/23/2025 9:16 AM

Picture1Frozen Home copyIts winter in West Wendover and as temperatures dramatically drop for sustained periods of time and with our sometimes harsh high freezing winds, our residents face higher risks of frozen and broken water lines in their homes. This isn’t just a plumbing issue; it can result in thousands of dollars in repairs and/or damage to your home. You can help prevent this by having your home prepared for the conditions.

Some general winterizing tips that can help:

  • Drain and cover your swamp cooler and ensure nothing freezes inside.
  • If you own a mobile home, secure you skirting: Keep the cold air out from beneath your home.
  • Insulate water supply lines.  Use insulation and heat tape under your home if necessary.  If you’re unsure, call a professional.
  • In extreme cold conditions especially at night, open your cupboard doors around your sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
  • Protect pipes in laundry rooms, especially if they adjoin an outside wall or unheated garage.
  • Check your water meter box lid to ensure it is secure.  You can consider possibly adding some batt insulation inside to help insulate the meter area.

If you think your pipes might be frozen you can contact the West Wendover City Office at (775) 664-3081.  We will coordinate with our Public Works team to dispatch someone to assess the issue.  If it is an emergency call 9-1-1

Stay warm and prevent expensive repairs by taking some steps now to protect your home.
