After more than three decades of dedicated service, Fire Chief Jeff Knudtson retires on April 17th from his role with the City of West Wendover, leaving behind a legacy defined by leadership, commitment, and the steady development of a department he helped build from the ground up.
Originally from Mead, Washington, Chief Knudtson’s journey in firefighting began in 1967 when he joined the volunteer fire department in his hometown. His passion for service quickly grew into a career, and he went on to become a professional firefighter with Spokane County Fire District 9. Through the years, he rose through the ranks to Battalion Chief, gaining valuable experience and leadership skills that would later shape his future in West Wendover.
In 1984, Knudtson moved to Wendover, where he became involved with the Wendover Utah Volunteer Fire Department. After the City of West Wendover's incorporation as a municipality in 1991 and recognizing Knudtson's experience, city leaders approached him in 1992 for guidance on how to create its own Fire Department. He presented three potential models for creating a department, and soon after, he was asked to lead this endeavor.
On December 15, 1992, Jeff Knudtson officially became Fire Chief of West Wendover, a department that was still in the making. But within weeks, on January 1, 1993, the West Wendover Fire Department took on operations, staffed by a small but committed crew. From those humble beginnings, Chief Knudtson spent the next 33 years building, shaping, and strengthening the West Wendover Fire Department into what it is today.
Reflecting on his career, Chief Knudtson shared that he is most proud of developing the department and watching over the city for more than three decades. His dedication is evident not only in the growth of the department, but also in his personal commitment, spending nearly every day in the office doing the work he loves.
City Manager Chris Melville remarked on Chief Knudtson’s lasting impact “Jeff has worked steadfastly since his appointment in 1992 ensuring that the City’s Fire Department was not just effective but efficient and community oriented. He has been a wonderful mentor to many in the Fire Department and been a solid member of the City's leadership team. The Fire Department through his leadership has consistently grown in service, responding with speed, professionalism, and care; protecting the life and property of our residents, businesses and visitors. 33 dutiful years of service, now that is a legacy to be proud of."
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Chief Knudtson will be remembered for his approachable nature, wonderful sense of humor, and the relationships he built along the way. When asked what he will miss most, his answer was simple: “Being here and the people.”
As he looks ahead to retirement, Chief Knudtson admits he is not entirely sure what comes next, but with a smile, he shared plans to spend time gold panning and metal detecting, enjoying a well-earned change of pace.
The community thanks you Chief Knduston and we wish you a wonderful and well deserved retirement!
