Gary Corona New Fire Chief 1

Story by City of West Wendover Staff

At the April 7th West Wendover City Council Meeting, Gary Corona was appointed by the City Council as the City’s new Fire Chief.

Gary first came to the Wendover area in 1989 from Salt Lake City, beginning his career as an EMT. He served on the Wendover Utah Volunteer Fire Department and later transitioned to the West Wendover Fire Department when the City was incorporated as a municipality in 1991. At that time, he joined as a part-time paid firefighter and continued in that role until being hired full-time in 2001.

Having called West Wendover home for decades, Gary shared that his desire to become Fire Chief was rooted in his commitment to give back to the community that has given so much to him. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has had here in West Wendover and a commitment to continue improving and growing the Fire Department.

In his new role, Gary is most excited about serving the community and working alongside the department’s staff. With several new team members joining the department, he looks forward to mentoring and supporting them in their careers, whether they continue serving locally or pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Gary’s current priorities include strengthening recruitment and retention for personnel, as well as expanding the department’s emergency medical services (EMS) capabilities. He is actively working on obtaining the necessary requirements to enhance the level of medical care provided on scene and is focused on upgrading equipment to better serve the community.

Gary also shared a personal note about what motivates him. “If it wasn’t for my kids and my grandkids, honestly, I wouldn’t be here. They’re my everything,” he said. He described it as an honor to step into this position and serve the town he calls home. “It’s truly an honor to be able to serve this community,” Gary added. “If anyone has concerns, comments, or input, I hope they reach out. I’m available.”

Congratulations Chief Corona!
